4th of July Piñata Cake

Ingredients:

  • (2) 6 inch vanilla cakes (dyed red) - CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE

  • (2) 6 inch vanilla cakes (dyed blue)

  • Double batch vanilla American buttercream frosting - CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE

  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles

  • Red, white, and blue M&Ms

  • Red and blue food coloring

  • Circle Cookie Cutter

Cake Assembly Directions:

  • Step 1: Level cakes with a "cake leveler" or serrated knife

  • Step 2: With cookie cutter, cut center out of 3 cakes (2 red and 1 blue)

  • Step 3: Spread white frosting on center of cake board

  • Step 4: Place red layer (with cut out) on top of cake board

  • Step 5: Spread white frosting on top of cake layer

  • Step 6: Pour sprinkles on top of frosting

  • Step 7: Place on blue layer with cut out

  • Step 8: Spread white frosting on top of cake layer

  • Step 9: Pour sprinkles on top of frosting

  • Step 10: Place on red layer of cake with cut out

  • Step 11: Spread white frosting on top of cake layer

  • Step 12: Pour sprinkles on top of frosting

  • Step 13: Fill in the hole with M&M's to the top

  • Step 14: Place on blue layer of cake (without cutout) upside down

  • Step 15: Scoop on white frosting on top of cake and spread out with an offset spatula covering entire cake

  • Step 16: Place in fridge for 20 minutes

  • Step 17: Now divide up remaining buttercream into 3 bowls

  • Step 18: Dye 1 bowl red, 1 bowl blue, keep 1 bowl as white

  • Step 19: Fill each color into a piping bag and then place all 3 piping bags into 1 big bag fitted with a Wilton 1M tip and color swirl piping coupler

  • Step 20: Pipe little dollops of frosting in a row around cake (hold the piping bag in the same direction)

  • Step 21: Change direction of color for each row
